How the internet of things transforms the railway industry

The internet of things will have a major impact on the railway industry as previously seen in the transportation and logistics industry. Trains operate at high speeds through tunnels and extreme weather conditions presenting real challenges when it comes to using complex IoT systems. However, modern trains and railway networks are fully loaded with electronics generating a lot of data, mostly used for a single control purpose without further wayside use by the operator. State of art train management systems, in which trains become interconnected communication hubs, can transmit data to network control centers, fleet managers and driver instructors. So, how can this recorded and collected data help the railway industry? Here are some potential use cases for the industry besides the already known systems and technologies provided by the train manufacturers and system integrators for maintenance:

·         Event and Danger prediction

·         Level crossing control in conjunction with train GPS positioning

·         Train efficiency

·         Fleet comparison

·         Life cycle control

·         Driver performance

·         Driver behavior and efficiency

·         Driving error improvement

·         Network control with higher accuracy

·         Event analyses and prediction

·         Minimize delays

·         ERTMS mileage calculation

The list is endless and every operator has different needs and wants. As long as the data is made available and used, any table, comparison, performance analysis and report can be made for improving the operation. Besides, parsing the data with algorithms can provide information and predictions on potential events, accidents or breakdowns.

Clearly, the Internet of Things creates many opportunities for those involved in rail transportation. Not only does it enable many aspects of operational management as well as improving the overall customer experience but the very transformative nature of IoT changes the traditionally capital and work intensive approach that has stifled the growth of the global rail industry for decades.
